As the temperature drops, most homeowners are beginning to worry about their energy bills, knowing they will have to keep the central heating on for several months now.

That is why one hack could be worth trying, as it has been claimed it could save as much as £70 on fuel bills every year.

According to Sophie Smith’s post on TikTok, which has had more than half a million views since it was uploaded, changing the flow temperature down to 50C could make a big difference to energy bills.

The same is true for reducing the water temperature to 55C, with the social media influencer saying: “The setting for most boilers is too high.”

She added: “This simple step could save you money and your home will feel just as warm.”

This tip can only help those with combi boilers, as doing it with hot water cylinders runs the risk of getting Legionnaires disease. This is caused by legionella bacteria, which grows in warm water.

It is not worth risking Legionnaires disease to save a few pounds though, as it can result in shortness of breath, muscle aches, headaches, and a fever, as well as nausea, diarrhoea and confusion.

However, homeowners with a combi boiler might be tempted to try this hack and see if their home is still warm, and their water is hot enough to enjoy a pleasant shower.

Although energy prices have dropped from their peak last year, they are still £1,834 for a typical household per year, according to the most recent Ofgem price cap

Of course, homes with more people will have to pay a higher amount than this, which is why saving as much as they can on their gas use will certainly help.
