Gas cookers, ovens and hobs are incredibly hard-working parts of the home and, as such, you certainly notice when they’re not operating as they should be. 

With all the gas appliances you have at home, it’s essential that your cooking appliances are in good working condition and that you have them serviced regularly so you know they don’t represent a safety risk.

Gas Safety Checks

A good gas safety check will include making sure that the oven and hob are both safe to use, that the gas is burning correctly and that the appliance is secure. It will also include checks to make sure that the pipework is securely connected, in a suitable location and that it’s not worn or damaged.

During your annual gas safety check, your engineer may find problems as they go, but if any issues appear in the months between checks, make sure you call out a competent, qualified and experienced engineer for an inspection and any necessary repairs.

Common gas cooker problems include burners that don’t ignite, temperature fluctuations, smell of gas, smoke coming from the oven, excessive condensation on kitchen windows, doors not closing properly and warm surfaces above the oven door. 

Signs that your appliance may be unsafe include smell of gas, black or brown marks around the appliance and a floppy yellow flame instead of a blue one.
