Although there are more choices these days when it comes to how you heat up your home, gas central heating remains a top option.

The reason for this is it is one of the cheapest forms of heating, particularly when using new boilers as they are considerably more efficient than older models, Which? reported.

Although many homeowners choose to update their boilers for new ones, the publication recommended using their central heating system till the end of its life, as they still run well as long as they are regularly serviced.

“Many boilers run at less than their rated efficiency,” it stated, giving homeowners a warning that their heating system might not be working as efficiently as it could.

Which? noted that many condensing combi boilers, for instance, are set at their maximum flow temperatures, which does not condense. Therefore, they lose more heat.

What’s more, the quality of boiler controls, insulation in the home, radiator balancing, and the size of the radiators affect how efficient it is, even if they buy one with a high efficiency rating.

To improve efficiency, homeowners can insulate their loft and walls, fit larger radiators, turn their heating flow temperature down to between 60C and 65C and get one with weather compensation controls.

This will ensure the flow temperature varies depending on how warm it is outside. Alternatively, homeowners could change the flow temperature manually depending on the weather.
