Brits might want to start thinking about how they can reduce the amount of gas they use to avoid the risk of blackouts.

This is after the International Energy Agency (IEA) warned Europe needs to voluntarily limit its gas usage due to Russia cutting off supply to its natural gas flows.

Its quarterly Gas Market Report revealed consumption on the continent is expected to drop by 0.8 per cent in 2022, and only increase by 0.4 per cent next year.

IEA’s director of energy markets and security Keisuke Sadamori explained the invasion of the Ukraine by Russia has led to a reduction in natural gas supplies to Europe. Consequently, this has caused “significant harm to consumers, businesses and entire economies”.

Due to the supply of gas being very limited, there is a real risk countries will have to impose blackouts to reduce energy usage.

The National Grid’s Electricity System Operator recently announced it is making plans to ensure energy lasts until the end of March 2023, such as limiting power during peak hours, Fox Business reported.

To ensure there is enough energy to last through the winter, households could do their bit by avoiding using gas or electricity during busy hours and turning off power when it is not needed, such as electronic devices on standby and lights in empty rooms.

As the situation in Russia remains unpredictable, it is unknown what will happen with the gas markets. However, Mr Sadamori stated: “All the signs point to markets remaining very tight well into 2023.”
