Interior design changes can be so subtle, you can find yourself sneering at the trends from the last decade before you’ve even realised they’re now outdated. So if you’re planning to redesign your bathroom this year, it is important you don’t just recreate your old decor, but really research what the latest washroom trends are.
Firstly, it could help by learning what is no longer en vogue when redecorating your bathroom.
- Ditch white bathrooms
Although you might feel you can’t go wrong with an all-white bathroom, the truth is they will appear very outdated this year.
“Those embarking on bathroom remodels now favour veinier stones with a more natural look instead of all-white materials,” said Steve Gottlieb of Coldwell Banker Warburg.
Instead, be brave enough to go for dark finishes, bright colours, natural tones and gold accents.
- Say ‘no’ to minimalism
While it can feel like a goal to achieve the ‘show home’ look, as it is free of clutter, it is also lacking in character, which is why maximalism is all the rage in 2023.
Minimalist bathrooms are being swapped for dramatic designs, with homeowners favouring eccentric patterns, colourful tiles, lots of texture, and different materials.
In fact, people seem to be doing all they can to steer clear of the clinical look, with plenty of foliage, clashing colours, decorative ornaments, patterned wallpaper, and framed pictures becoming hugely popular.
- Goodbye to bulb-framed mirrors
We’re a generation of selfie lovers, but not to the sacrifice of good interior design, it seems, as bulb-framed mirrors are so passe these days.
As Southern Living says: “Your bathroom should be pretty and practical. It should not feel like a backstage dressing room or a sterile office bathroom.”
Instead, people are choosing lighting to create a certain mood in the bathroom. You could opt for decorative wall lights that offer a low level of lighting for a spa feel, while also fitting a task light when you want to see yourself up close, such as when putting on make-up or shaving your face.
- Shower curtains are long gone
Shower curtains might be an inexpensive way of protecting the floor from water splash, but they can look cheap and tacky, which is why they are being ripped out this year. Additionally, it doesn’t take long before they are speckled in mould and mildew, meaning they need to be replaced regularly.
Speaking with Homes And Gardens, designer Ann Marie Cousins said: “We would suggest that a basic glass shower frame is all you need to elevate your shower area.”
She added that it also makes the room look bigger, as well as providing a “refined look” to the interior design.
- Abandon everything matching
Homeowners in 2023 are more confident than ever, and don’t prescribe to certain design rules, such as ‘everything must match’. In fact, when it comes to bathroom design, the more eclectic the combination, the better.
This means floor and wall tiles can contrast, and basins and toilets don’t have to be the same design, giving people the freedom to install what they want in their bathroom. However, there should still be something that links the fixtures together, such as a design theme, colour or era, otherwise the bathroom could end up looking like a hotchpotch of ideas.
Once you have settled on your bathroom design, book a plumber in East Dulwich to install your suite as soon as possible, so you can enjoy your brand new washroom straight away.
